Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by few fungal species that readily colonize crops and contaminate them with toxins in the field or after harvest. Surveillance studies have showed that mycotoxin contamination is a world-wide problem, since it is estimated that 25% of the world's crop production and 20% of crop production within the European Union may be contaminated with these contaminants. In this study, polymeric monoliths with gold nanoparticles (AuNP@monolith) were investigated as microcartridges for the analysis of protein biomarkers by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry (SPE-CE-MS). “Plug-and-play” microcartridges (7 mm) were prepared from a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-based monolithic capillary column (5 cm x 250 µm i.d.), which was modified with ammonia and subsequently functionalized with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The intake of polyphenols has been associated with a risk reduction of type 2 diabetes. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, the molecules that might be metabolically active after ingestion are only starting to be investigated regarding this metabolic disease.
